Her husband, Lord Douro, succeeded his father as Duke of Wellington in 1852. She served as Mistress of the Robes to Queen Victoria from 1861 to 1868, and again from 1874 to 1880. The Duchess of Wellington was appointed Mistress of the Robes to Queen Victoria in 1861 by the Liberal Prime Minister Lord Palmerston, and continued in that role until 1868, serving through the governments of Lord Russell, Lord Derby and Benjamin Disraeli. She was again Mistress of the Robes in Disraeli's second government, 1874 to 1880. (See Wikipedia for more information)James Hayday (1796 – 1872), was a British bookbinder. Works bound by Hayday became famous, and his name attached to a book raised its value twenty-five per cent. Edward Gardner of the Oxford Warehouse, 7 Paternoster Row, secured Hayday's services for the Oxford books exclusively. William Pickering, bookseller, of 57 Chancery Lane, gave him the benefit of his long experience, and introduced him to many wealthy patrons. *****This fine binding volume is in very good condition. Few spots of foxing on 1st few pages. There is minor rubbing along spine. The gilt is on all 3 sides and has minor scratches but nice sheen remaining. The binding is very tight and there are no remainder marks, not ex-library. Any issues have been reflected in the pricing. Please see pictures for more information and detail.
