Description: This is a letter by Gaganvihari Lallubhai Mehta(1900–1974), the ambassador of India to the United States from 1952 to 1958. Mehta was awarded the Padma Vibhushan (the second-highest civilian award of the Republic of India) in 1959. Mehta was refused service in a Houston airport restaurant because he was not white, leading John Foster Dulles to conclude that racial segregation in the United States was hurting foreign relations. The letter is dated October 24, 1953. Mehta wrote the letter at the Ambassador Hotel, in Los Angeles. Robert F. Kennedywas assassinated at that hotel 15 years later, while campaigning for the presidency. This letter is typed on the official stationeryof the Embassy of India in Washington, DC.
