(India) Captain Allan Newton Scott (1824-1870) was an officer in the Madras Artillery during the two years of the Indian Rebellion (1857-1858) and afterwards. Not much seems to be recorded about his military career: a gazette from 1856 mentions him as ‘to be promoted Captain’. His relative fame in his own time was earned not by military exploits but by his prowess as an early amateur photographer, a part-time vocation that he is said to have adopted partly on account of the ‘monotony’ of military life in India. He was a frequent exhibiter at the Madras Photographic Society, of which he was also an early member. In the 1859-1860 exhibition he won a gold medal in stereoscopic photography, displacing John Nicholas himself. Nicholas was a sought-after early Madras photographer, responsible for some of the best and earliest photographs of South Indian dancers, especially from Madras. He went on to found the Nicholas & Curth’s photographic studio, which later became Nicholas & Co. Beating him to the gold medal was therefore an unexpected triumph. Allan Newton Scott then went on to display his photographs of India at the London International Exhibition of 1862. By this time he had already produced the 100 albumen prints that were published by Lovell Reeve in the same year, with accompanying text, as Sketches in India. This album of mounted photographic prints of various aspects of life in India, including scenic views and architecture, as well as a section on Sketches of Native Character earned very good reviews in England.
