"1715 Plate Fleet"This coin was recovered from the wreck site of the Spanish Treasure Flotilla which was lost in a terrible hurricane on July 31, 1715 off the east coast of Florida. On July 27, 1715, the combined fleet of Don Antonio de Echeverz and Captain-General Juan Esteban de Ubilla weighed anchor at Havana. The convoy heads northeast, bound for the Gulf of Florida and then to Spain. On July 30th the sky darkens and the wind drops. The wind rises, then the storm! At 2:00 a.m., July 31st, violently, the wind shifts almost 90 degrees to blow at hurricane force from the East-North-East. One after another the ships are driven to the shore of Florida onto the jagged reefs. Ten of the eleven ships are pounded to death, some with all hands. The storm is over. The treasures of the ships are spewed out over rocks and shallows and sand. Some are recovered by a salvage operation in 1716. But most lie in these waters, undisturbed for another 265 years. This type of coin is unique in its shape and striking, therefore no two of these coins will ever be exactly the same . Yet, amazingly, for each denomination, the weight is almost exactly the same. They were hand-made, mostly by the indigenous Indians of the New World, cut from the end of a refined silver bar, then clipped, heated, and hand struck between two crudely made engraved dies. They were then filed to the exact requisite weight of silver, according to the denomination. They made them in denominations of 1/2, 1, 2, 4, and 8 Reales and they were called "Pieces of Eight" or Cob coins (meaning end of the bar).
