See the complete description below. …SHIP c.1950s Popular BOBLO ISLAND Steamer Excursion Boat SS COLUMBIA @ Detroit MI or Downriver Docks...Photograph Great Lakes Maritime Boat History and Heritage Photo not RPPC 1...Size (if photograph): 5" in. X 3-7/8" in. approximately. SS Columbia was the last remaining excursion steamship from the turn of the 20th century in existence, the second to last being her running mate and sister ship SS Ste. Claire which burned in 2018. Both were designed by Frank E. Kirby and Louis O. Keil, interior designer. Columbia was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1979, and was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1992. There are few things more beloved by Detroiters than "the Boblo Boats," a pair of steamships that carted generations of families off to the Boblo Island theme park. The pair are the two oldest propeller-driven steam excursion ships still in existence in the U.S. As the "big sister" to the SS Ste. Claire, that makes the SS Columbia the oldest passenger steamer. For nearly a century, the Columbia puffed up and down the Detroit River. The Columbia was built in 1902 for the Detroit, Belle Isle & Windsor Ferry Co. by the Detroit Ship Building Co. in Wyandotte, Mich. The SS Columbia was launched May 10, 1902, to run day trips between Detroit and what was then Bob-Lo Island. The Ste. Claire followed eight years later. They were both designed by Frank E. Kirby; Louis Keil handled the interior decoration, outfitting the boat with mahogany paneling, leaded glass, gilded moldings and more, though much of that beauty was painted over in its later years. Current Status, she is severally deteriorated and undergoing a potential 20 million dollar renovation somewhere on the US East Coast. Great item, part of a wonderful selection of Great Lakes Boat and Ship Photographs and Photo RPPC Postcards. These items are part of a vast collection from a passionate Great Lakes Maritime enthusiast, collector, historian, and member of the Marine Historical Society of Detroit and the Dossin Great Lakes Museum. Some of these items were individually photographed, and there are no known negatives of them! All…true treasures for those interested in our Great Lakes Maritime History and Heritage! You will find that an item may be a limited special issue reproduction published in the 1950s by the MHSD (noted explicitly as a Pesha Series photograph printed from his Glass Plate Negatives). Some are real photo postcards, and several of the images found were actually made into this collector's Christmas cards (printed on photographic paper) back in the late 50s and early 60s. The collector and historian of these items was also a member of the Dossin Great Lakes Museum, founded in 1949 as the City Maritime Museum aboard the J. T. Wing wooden schooner, the last commercial sailing ship on the Great Lakes. The museum closed by 1956, less than a decade later, because of the deteriorating condition of the schooner, but Maritime History lived on!!! The Marine Historical Society of Detroit (MHSD), if you do not know, is a non-profit organization founded in 1944 to promote the study and preservation of Maritime History in the Great Lakes region, a world resource on the matter. The Society's headquarters are located in Detroit, Michigan. The MHSD's mission is to "collect, preserve, and share the maritime history of the Great Lakes region."
