Description: This is a SHINGLE MILL in WASHINGTON 1930s era Vintage PHOTOGRAPH from CHRIS MUELLER Many shingle mills succeeded at Salmon Bay, the westernmost section of the Lake Washington Ship Canal. The bay was surrounded by flat land that allowed for good access to rail transportation, making it perfect for saw mills. At one point, Ballard was called the “Shingle Capital of the World”. "The Seattle Cedar Lumber Manufacturing Company in Ballard, purchased by the brothers W.H and A.F. McEwen in the 1890s, grew into the largest mill of its type in the world" (Cook, pg. 107), illustrating the positive impact of the Locks. The locks and canal affected the shingle milling industry by making it easier to transport the raw material logs in from the water, make the shingles, then send the shingles out again by water. "In addition, even though Ballard had the smallest amount of shingle mills in comparison to other major milling hubs, it produced about 30,000,000 more shingles than the second highest major shingle mill hub, which had 41 more mills than Ballard!" This demonstrates that even though Ballard had far fewer mills than other areas, it was able to import and export its products so efficiently that it took less time and saved them money, helping the Salmon Bay area's industry.
