It gets to be medium loud on the middle setting, which I find almost too windy. Then the highest wind speed setting is very loud and like a windstorm, but it would be excellent for rapid hair drying. I really like the 3 heat settings too (there's four if you count the cold setting.) I appreciate knowing that this hair dryer will never get hot enough to hurt my hair, but honestly, I think that the lowest heat setting is great at just a bit hotter than warm. My favorite part of this hairdryer though is the setting for drying the last 20% of my hair with the IQ ability to protect my roots and scalp. This is what makes the very expensive price worthwhile for me as someone with a lot of damage and hair loss. So far I've only tried a couple of the handy attachments and they come on and off easily. While everyone else seems to love the diffuser, I find it a little too big and awkward and it just seems to be in the way. The attachment that focuses air in one direction for straightening did a great job on making my hair look nice, although that does take longer to dry my hair. I really like that this hair dryer is small and compact when folded up, which is how I'm enjoying keeping it stored. It took me a minute to figure out how to fold it up, but it's easy now that I know it's not a button to press and that you just pull down on the top. While the small size would fit great in even a small suitcase, it's just a little to heavy for me to want to travel with it. My hair is thick, but I lost weight and lost about 75% of it, so I am dealing with less volume of thick hair - and lots of new growth hair underneath. My hair has lots of waves to it, so if I naturally dry it, my hair tends to be frizzy.I tested this HD542 against another Shark blow dryer. My process was the same for both - blowing using the brush and using both the hottest settings as well as the scalp shield. They are very similar in size, weight, and how to operate. I found this one left my hair straighter than the other one.This blow dryer is more efficient than my old one! I love the brush attachment as well as the smoother. The smoother makes your hair feel silky and soft! You won't be disappointed. What impressed me most was the silky smoothness of the finished product. Seriously. I have never paid $229 for a hair dryer. $150? yes. Believe it or not, the functionality and bells and whistles of the Shark SpeedStyle Pro Flex Professional are 100% worth that price.Shana4.0 out of 5 stars Lots of power, lightweightReviewed in the United States on October 31, 2024 This is a very nice dryer, but I'm not sure if it's nice enough to justify the price. I appreciate that it protects my scalp from burning--that is a big draw for me and may justify the price, but I'll need to use it longer to decide that for sure. The high air setting is SUPER strong--too strong for me, as I ended up tangling my hair into a couple of small knots that I had to cut out because I went in both directions with one section of hair (up and down) on high, and it has so much power that it tangled my hair! I learned to use the medium setting unless I'm only going in one direction (I should say I have fine, tangle-prone hair, so YMMV). The hot is really hot, but I usually use medium on any dryer, and that works for me on this one as well. The power is there, though--no complaints about that.The diffuser works well. I do like the fact that you can press it closer to your scalp because of the retractable spikey things, but I can't say it made a big difference to me. The touch-up brush tangled in my hair and I didn't find it very useful--it feels awkward, no matter which direction I turn it or how much I practice with it. The polisher thing, though, is MAGIC. I don't know how it works, but MAN it kills flyaways and gives me the smoothest blowout like nothing I've ever seen. Whatever voodoo Shark does that makes that tool work is fully worth it. Even when I just rough-dry and curl or flat iron my hair, I run that tool over it a few passes and my hair looks pro-smooth. It's fantastic! I think I should've gotten the attachment that is like a round brush instead of the touch up tool, and I'm going to order it as soon as I can find one that fits this dryer (the ones here on Amazon that I've found so far are for the older model of dryer).The buttons are a little hard to adjust while you're using it until you get used to the feel and location. I love the light weight of the dryer, but it's loud on high (I find it louder than my Rusk dryer) and I don't love traveling with it because the cord is REALLY heavy with the box in the middle of it (I think it's a fuse for safety, maybe?). I travel a lot so I had hoped this would replace my fold-up dryer that has very low power, but the cord weight and size doesn't make this a practical option even though the dryer itself is very lightweight (my arm, at least, appreciates that).I can't decide whether this is worth the price to you. I think, personally, it's a lot better dryer than the Dyson (I've used both), but I like the Dyson tools better...except for that flyaway smoother thing you get here, which is phenomenal. I certainly wouldn't regret the cost of this, but if I were choosing between it and the Dyson (2 high-end dryers), I can't say there's a clear winner. I will update if I can find the round brush tool and it makes the difference.
