Description: Museum of Primitive Art (New York, N.Y.) (1957). The Museum of Primitive Art: Autumn 1957: Selected Works from the Collection #3 Color in Sculpture and Ceramics. New York, Museum of Primitive Art Published during the heyday of the now defunct Museum of Primitive Art, this publication was part of a series of catalogs of exhibitions featuring choice objects from the museum's growing collection. With Nelson Rockefeller as the president and founder and Robert Goldwater as a director, the museum pioneered the collection of objects from different parts of the world as art and not as ethnographic curiosities. This catalog, from the Autumn of 1957, is particularly strong in Oceanic and Precolumbian works of art including the infamous giant terracotta from Vera Cruz later discovered to be a recent fake. Since the museum was later absorbed into the Metropolitan Museum of Art, many of the works became iconic of their respective cultures. Check out my other listings of African, Oceanic, Native American art and art history, and other regions of world art and cultures for additional rare finds including additional publications by the Museum of Primitive Art.
