Description: This high quality becket is set on a mahogany mount allowing it to be used as an elegant and ornate door knocker or simply as a wall mounted piece of nautical art. This piece has turks heads, coach whipping, sennit braiding and ringbolt hitching. Painted and varnished, it makes a solid hinged knocker. Sailors of old would carry their personal belongings to their ship in a sea chest. The handles were called beckets and were made with rope and traditional knotting techniques. The handles were often highly ornate and considered a demonstration of a knotter’s skill. The handles were usually made by the sailor themselves and were used to carry and secure the chest. They were often decorated with intricate knotting patterns, such as turk’s head or footrope knots, Matthew Walker knots, and Spanish hitching. The handles were often made with a filler material called a "pudding", which gave them their characteristic shape. The sea chest becket is an important part of maritime history and a testament to the skill and craftsmanship of sailors. They were considered the highest form of a sailor's marlinspike seamanship skills. Today, they are still made using traditional techniques and are valued for their ornamental and historical significance.
