X 3-3/8" in. approx. The Michigan State Sanatorium became known as one of the most modern and up-to-date sanatoriums, drawing patients from all over the United States. The University of Michigan Hospital pioneered the idea of a Convalescent Hospital, dedicating two floors to the medical treatment of tuberculosis in 1931. U of M is also credited with the routine chest X-rays as part of hospital admission, a practice that became nearly standard everywhere and is credited with helping detect tuberculosis, heart trouble, and lung cancer. The first tuberculosis legislation affecting the University Hospital was passed in 1929, by the state Tuberculosis Sanatorium Commission. The commission was given control of any sanatoriums to be established and the power to transfer patients from state tuberculosis sanatoriums to the University Hospital for special treatment. A fund for a one-hundred-bed University Hospital addition for tubercular patients, equipped for diagnosis and special surgical treatment rather than for prolonged care...
