Description: SELLING HERE A SPLENDIDMOUNTED PRINT FROM THE ARCHIVES. BRITISH ART HISTORYBATHERS NEAR THE SEABY JOHN DUNCAN FERGUSSON 1874-1961 IMAGE SIZE: 17.5 cm x 16cmCONDITION: PERFECT This splendid image was printed and issued ten years ago when the topographical history of art was being compiled `The latter half of John Duncan Fergusson's painting was dominated by his exuberant images of bathers and nudes, which for many hold an enduring appeal. Their vibrant colour and mood of exoticism and sensuality convey his immense love of life and capacity to appreciate its simplest pleasures. The nude form was an extremely important subject for Fergusson, who, as a self-taught artist, would have had limited access to the life model in his formative years unlike his contemporaries who had received formal art school training. This seemed to ignite a passionate and pure response to the human form that is so associated with Fergusson's finest work. ABOUT THE ARTIST Born just outside Edinburgh in 1874, Fergusson only spent a short spell at the city's Trustees Academy before joining the artistic ferment in Paris at the turn of the twentieth century. The sitter in the present work is possibly Kathleen Dillon, one of Margaret Morris's early pupils and dance troupe at the first Margaret Morris School in Chelsea from around 1910. She became good friends with Margaret as well as John Fergusson, and was the first of Margaret's pupils that Fergusson wanted to paint. He produced several oil paintings of her, including Simplicity (private collection) and Rose Rhythm (private collection). Kathleen lived with Fergusson and Margaret in London for a period around 1914, possibly when this painting was painted, and at this time she also started teaching Margaret Morris Movement. She became one of Margaret's principal dancers before going on to have a notable career as a dancer and choreographer. .
