Description: Scleranthus biflorus A spreading, moss-like plant from Australia (including Tasmania) and New Zealand, with small, bright green, linear foliage and short stems with two minute flowers. Naturally found growing at higher elevations, this wonderful Carnation relative forms dense, billowing and mounding mats of foliage. Though common in its native lands, this wonderful plant is rare in cultivation in the US. Scleranthus biflorus requires a well drained soil with moisture, and is a plant that does not like to dry out, nor does it like to be water logged. An excellent plant for rock gardens with some moisture, it is a plant that comes into its own from spring to autumn. It looks great when planted in a rock garden, where it will mold around and conform to the rocks. It's also an interesting choice for container growing where it will form domed mounds of its wonderful, tightly-compact foliage, that will also spill over the pot's edges. Requires full sun to afternoon shade, in moist, well-drained, humus-rich soil. Will spread to 24-30" across and 2" to 6" tall. Not suitable for planting where it will receive foot traffic. Hardy to 20-25 degrees F. Protect from hard frost when young. This offering is for one young , blooming-size, division-grown plant in a 3 1/4" pot - similar to what may be seen in the last two photos. Shipped in Pot. All photos are of plants in my own garden!
