Description: A scarce and distinctive vintage edition of Lewis Carroll's "Through the Looking-Glass and What Alice Found There" published in 1940 by Macmillan and Co Ltd., London. With 50 of the famous illustrations by John Tenniel. Also contains a list of Dramatis Personae and a reproduction of the chess game with board and moves. This edition in an unusual faux vellum cream binding in excellent shape, with a blindstamped border and gilt Tweedledum and Tweedledee in the center of the front board. Spine with blindstamping and gilt, including a very charming blindstamped illustration of The Walrus. Book in excellent condition- cover and interior both spotless and free of foxing. Only condition issue I note is that the first five or so pages have a very slight crease to the top right corner (see photos). The second of Alice's Adventures, first published in 1871. Set some six months later than the earlier book, Alice again enters a fantastical world, this time by climbing through a mirror into the world that she can see beyond it. Includes such celebrated verses as "Jabberwocky" and "The Walrus and the Carpenter", and the episode involving Tweedledum and Tweedledee. COOL BOOK, and a rare find.
