Description: Please take the time to review all my other listings after you have looked at this one! I will be listing a broad and diverse range of Vintage Communications and Technology items, related Books, Periodicals and Ephemera...something for everyone! This is a very scarce Adey Portable 4 Receiver produced by Adey Radio Ltd. of London. First introduced in 1929, this novel set was quite unique and visionary for its time. This particular example was an improved model introduced in 1931 and incorporated patented devices like the "Adey choke valve" and the four function "Key Control". This is one of the first radios engineered not only to perform well, but to modularize assembly and miniaturize radio receiver design and construction. Most notably, the set incorporated the "Adey choke valves" (made for them by Hivac and Cossor) allowing plug-in close coupled stages. (You can see the chokes wound on the valve bases in the pictures.) It also utilizes a four function "Key" brought outside the cabinet (plugs in on top). This patented key controls high and low voltage, long wave and short wave switching, tapped detector anode inductance providing enhanced selectivity and control of positive feedback and a variable coupling between the detector anode inductance and the antenna circuit inductance by rotation of the key around the vertical axis. Finally, the chassis is made of moulded bakelite to control the position of the components and wiring layout... This set is in excellent condition! It has gracefully aged with only modest wear and is just wonderful to admire. The raised front protecting the cone speaker is just great with no damage to the grill and only one slight anomaly to the screen underneath...but you have to look hard to see it! Internally, everything looks like it just came from the factory. There is no damage to the cone speaker. A previous owner took the "C" battery connection wires and attached them to a plastic socket for AA batteries. This can easily be reversed. "A" battery is 4V, "B" battery is 90V and the "C" battery is 3V. Tubes have good filaments and continuity to the chokes. Very difficult to find in any condition, and as you can see from the pictures, this example is just beautiful! The four valve radio measures just 8.75" wide, 9.5" tall, 6.75" deep and sits upon a rotating base! Shipping weight will be about 12 pounds. If you are looking for more information, there is a nice review in the "British Vintage Wireless Society Bulletin" Volume 3, No. 4 from March 1979... To quote from that article: "Adey was ahead of his time in his use of modular concepts of chassis design, plug in stages and simplification of wiring- all astonishing forward looking." This Adey Portable 4 would make an excellent addition to any collection! I will pack this item properly and with great care. I have been shipping these kinds of vintage materials worldwide since the 1980's. Buyer is responsible for shipping and insurance. I usually ship within one business day after receipt of confirmed payment... THANK YOU FOR LOOKING!
