Description: Sassafras Bowl Turning Blank #58 is a 10" diameter, 6" deep wood blank. I left it "bark on" specifically for natural edge work. This is a real chunk of wood and not for sissies. Sassafras is a common tree in the Arkansas Ozarks and I have done many natural edged bowls from it. I have liked sassafras because it has a rugged appearing bark that tends remain on the bowl's edge, although I usually reinforce it with a thin superglue. Natural edged bowls are popular because they appear to be oval shaped when finished and people like the rustic looking bark edge. There is a bowl in there somewhere similar to the one in the photo. A couple of tips:1. There are a lot of corners on this piece, so be sure to secure it with both head- and tail-stock so that it cannot get away from you. A good way is to remove the bark down to solid wood at the headstock end, drill a hole and install a woodworm screw. 2. You may get some chips off of your natural edge, so before you start, be sure to remove and save some pieces of bark from what will be the opening into your bowl so that you can use them for repairs.3. The color of the lead of a common wooden pencil is the same as that of the bark and can be used to shade small repairs.
