Sargent VBM No 42 wood scraper plane mostly nice but missing nut & sole drilled

Description: You are bidding on one Sargent Number 42 wood scraper plane as pictured. There are some condition issues, so please keep reading.It is marked "SARGENT V-B-M" on the cap that secures the blade, and "42" on the base below the handle, which is hard to photograph. The blade appears to be original but is not marked.VBM stood for Very Best Made.The blade measures just under 2-7/8" by about a 32nd over 5" in length. It is about .050" thick, and has a slightly burnished edge on one end. Neither end is beveled. This came from Sargent without a wood base, similar to the Stanley Number 12 scraper. At some time, someone had drilled 4 holes in the sole in order to add a base, but there is not now a wood base with it. The outer nut on the long adjusting rod is missing. It should have 5/16-20 threads.Condition other than the 4 holes and the missing nut is good to very good. The sole has some patina (color) and a few bits of rust and pitting, with the rust and pitting mostly out in the far corners. The sides also have some patina. Much of the japanning remains, but has dulled a bit or would benefit from a cleaning. The brass nut that secures the blade has some tarnish. The wood handle has a variety of small scratches and dings. The blade has some patina and light rust, more on one side than on the other.Except as noted, there are no cracks or chips or chunks missing from any of the castings, and everything operates properly. The Post Office now has several prices increases during each year, raising a few things but not everything at each increase. And they now raise their rates during the Holidays, which means early October to late January. Their big increases are in January, timed to start at the end of the Holiday rates, and this year is no exception. And it's not just the postage rates, the insurance charges and the delivery signature charges have also gone up. There is now a surcharge for Priority Mail packages over 20" long, and another for Priority Mail packages over 30" long, because those longer packages won't fit in their automatic machines. And the Post Office has discontinued the Regional Flat Rate boxes, which were often less expensive for certain sizes and weights. I try to pick the best shipping option for each listing, based both on what is the least expensive and on what I think is needed to protect the item. If the value is $250 or over, eBay requires your signature at delivery for the buyer and seller protections to be in effect.SALES TAX: Interstate sales tax is now the reality on all the major selling websites including eBay. If I ship to a state where eBay is required to collect sales tax, eBay will charge you the sales tax for your location.
