Description: SAM HOUSTON. Sam Houston (1793–1863) was an American general and statesman who led the Texan Army to victory at the Battle of San Jacinto ending the Texas Revolution and later served as the first President of Texas. IMPORTANT DOCUMENT SIGNED BY SAM HOUSTON AS GOVERNOR OF TEXAS APPOINTING HIS CHIEF OF STATE, WHILE ALSO INCREASING HIS RANK TO GENERAL Important partly-printed document signed by, “Sam Houston,” as Governor of Texas appointing, “Forbes Britton to the Office of Aid-de-camp and acting assistant Adjutant General to the Commander in Chief of the militia of Texas and to rank as Brigadier General.” Governor Houston chooses his chief of staff, while also increasing his rank to general. Britton (1812-1861) served with distinction in the Mexican-American War, created a ship canal in the Corpus Christi Bay, founded the Texas Western Railroad Company, and was elected as a state senator representing the Nueces district. “APPOINT…FORBES BRITTON TO THE OFFICE OF AIDE-DE-CAMP AND ACTING ASSISTANT ADJUTANT GENERAL TO THE COMMANDER IN CHIEF OF THE MILITIA OF TEXAS AND TO RANK AS BRIGADIER GENERAL” Contains one page, measures 14.75 by 11.75 inches, created in Austin on February 13, 1860, and in poor condition with heavy dark staining (having previously been mounted to a non-acid free black board), dampstaining, small separations and holes along the folds, and extensive tap repairs on the verso; however, the signature is in very good condition with only staining to the ‘S,’ ink erosion to the ‘n,’ and a tape repair on the verso.
