The play tells in one act the Biblical story of Salome, stepdaughter of the tetrarch Herod Antipas, who, to her stepfather's dismay but to the delight of her mother Herodias, requests the head of Jokanaan (John the Baptist) on a silver platter as a reward for dancing the Dance of the Seven Veils. Salome, the Daughter of Herodias (14 AD - between 62 and 71), is known from the New Testament. Christian traditions depict her as an icon of dangerous female seductiveness. ---------- About the Illustrator/Author---------- Oscar Fingal O'Flahertie Wills Wilde (1854–1900) was an Irish playwright, poet and author of numerous short stories and one novel. Known for his biting wit, he became one of the most successful playwrights of the late Victorian era in London, and one of the greatest celebrities of his day. Several of his plays continue to be widely performed, especially The Importance of Being Earnest. Aubrey Vincent Beardsley (1872–1898) was an English illustrator and author. His father, Vincent Paul Beardsley, was the son of a tradesman; Vincent had no trade himself, however, and instead relied on a private income from an inheritance that he received from his maternal grandfather when he was twenty-one. In 1888 he obtained a post in an architect's office. In 1892 he attended the classes at the Westminster School of Art, then under Professor Fred Brown. Most of his images are done in ink, and feature large dark areas contrasted with large blank ones, and areas of fine detail contrasted with areas with none at all. Aubrey Beardsley was the most controversial artist of the Art Nouveau era, renowned for his dark and perverse images and the grotesque erotica, which were the main themes of his later work. His most famous erotic illustrations were on themes of history and mythology, including his illustrations for Aristophanes' Lysistrata and Wilde's Salomé. Beardsley was a public character as well as a private eccentric. He said, "I have one aim—the grotesque. If I am not grotesque I am nothing." ---------- Return Policy----------If you are unsatisfied with your purchase for any reason, a FULL refund will be issued so long as I am notified within 14 days after you receive your purchase.
