He built a well-appointed Federal style house for his daughter in Greeneville which he gave to her as a wedding present in 1823 when she married Dr. Alexander Williams. The couple were well known for entertaining, welcoming three Presidents, as well as the Marquis de Lafayette, Davy Crockett, etc. During the Civil War, Greeneville changed hands several times and was occupied by both Union and Confederate forces. In 1864, Confederate General John Hunt Morgan was staying with Catherine Williams when Union forces discovered and killed him.
