Description: In the Sacco-Vanzetti case there two crimes; an unsuccessful holdup in Bridgewater, for which Vanzetti, but not Sacco, was tried at Plymouth, & the S. Braintree murders, for which both were tried at Dedham. The attempted holdup occurred 12/24/1919. A payroll amounting $33,113 was being carried from the Bridgewater Trust Company to the White Shoe Factory in a Ford truck manned by a driver, a paymaster & the paymaster's guard. En route three men got out from a parked car rushed the truck & began firing. The guard & the pay master returned fire. No one was hit, nothing was stolen, the truck moved on. In the S. Brainatree murder case in 4/1920 the paymaster & a guard were killed while carrying a payroll of more than $15,000 between two buildings of the Slater Morrill Shoe Factory. Three men picked up the boxes of cash & left the scene of the murders. Sacco & Vanzetti were found guilty of murder & after the controversial trial & a series of appeals they were executed in 1927. There's a highly politicized dispute over their guilt & over whether the trials were fair. There was contradictory evidence.
