Description: Sabal sp. 'Tamaulipas', or Mexican Scrub Palm (I don't care for that name), is an as-of-now still undescribed palm from the state of Tamaulipas, Mexico. It's been described as a "Sabal minor on steroids", and I can't argue this point. It's larger in all parts than S. minor, grows much faster, and has monstrous leaves. It really looks like something from Jurassic Park! Some botanists would prefer to lump it in with Sabal minor, but there is actual genetic work going on as you are reading this, and hopefully we will soon have an answer as to the origins/parentage/species status of this palm. I really think it's a separate species and deserves that status. We'll find out relatively soon! Sabal sp. 'Tamaulipas' (It will have a new species name very soon) is interesting also in that as the palm ages, its trunk tends to crawl along the ground. The leaves are also slightly costapalmate. Another great fact about this spectacular palm is that it has proven to be extremely cold-hardy! Credible reports place its hardiness probably somewhere in the zone 7b range (5-10F), with the caveat that it can probably take some lower temperatures with significant damage and still recover. Not quite as hardy as Sabal minor, but still very hardy. It's still small enough to protect it fairly easily if you have a catastrophic cold event upcoming. Seeds from this palm are almost never offered! I'm not sure if I will ever have seeds to offer again, but I am pleased to be able to do so currently. They are guaranteed to be the actual thing from actual Sabal sp. 'Tamaulipas' palms. I have over 20 years experience with growing palms and collecting seeds. I don't offer seeds from anything that I am unsure of. Germination of Sabal is pretty simple. Just give them some good bottom heat and keep the media moist and they should start popping in a few weeks. Some people start them in community pots outside in the spring and transplant later (don't wait too long to transplant or you'll have a tangled mess of roots that will not be fun to work with!!!).
