Developed by the Bowen-McLaughlin-York (BMY) division, the vehicle uses the chassis of the M109 155mm self-propelled howitzer, which the company calls the M109 Ammunition Supply System. In 1979, three prototypes of the armored ammunition supply vehicle were tested in the ergonomic laboratory. In August 1980, the Agency for Tank Motor Vehicles (TACOM) proposed a tender for the manufacture, testing and logistical supply of the vehicle. In March 1981, Bowen-McLaughlin-York Division signed a contract with TACOM to produce five FAASV prototypes, named XM992. The prototypes were delivered in November and December 1981. In March 1982, it was developed and tested at the Yuma Proving Ground and Fort Sill. After the test, it was officially finalized, called the M992 field artillery ammunition supply vehicle, and was officially equipped in 1984. The total cost of research, development, testing and qualification of the vehicle as of 1982 was $5.6 million; the total cost of purchasing 54 vehicles in fiscal year 1983 totaled $30.7 million; the cost of purchasing 120 vehicles in fiscal year 1984 was $59.1 million; 1985 The cost of purchasing 170 vehicles in fiscal year was $78.2 million; the budget request for purchasing 197 vehicles in fiscal year 1986 was $101.5 million.
