Brief excerpts from one of the enclosures with Plate #2: · “Life has been good to the young princess since she found her way out of the wild forest where her evil stepmother, the tsaritza, sent her to be eaten by wolves. She has been befriended by seven bogatyrs, tall handsome young men who love and protect her. . . · One spring morning. . . she sees an old bent woman. Lonely for company, the princess goes outside to talk to the woman and offer her a bit of bread. But the maiden’s dog will not allow the two to meet. Finally the princess tosses the bread to the woman and in return the woman tosses a sweet golden apple to the princess, which she accepts eagerly. The seven bogatyrs ride with the wind on their handsome steeds to warn the princess but they are too late; she takes the fateful first bite of the poisoned apple and falls lifeless to the ground.” Master Artist Aleksandr Ivanovich Kovalev uses brilliant washes of colour (tempera paints intensified by mixing with egg yolks), including verdant green, flame blue, and cherry red, to convey the vitality and passion for life found in true Russian folk literature. The trees, the wildflowers, and even the road appear to roll and sway as if under a powerful enchantment. . . . “In the centuries-old tradition, gold leaf ground by hand and then applied with the finest sable hair brushes breathes life into each delicate element in the scene. Every leaf and flower pod, every toss of the horse’s mane and drape of the princess’s gown is painstakingly embellished with gold, giving ‘the Princess and the Seven Bogatyrs’ a luminous quality unique to the lacquer miniatures of the Palekh artists.” The Legend of this Plate is set forth in the artwork and also in written detail in one of the enclosures which provides us much more detail than above, and of course, we know the happy ending!
