Description: Imperial Russian wooden plate (diameter 30 cm) traditionally used to welcome guests and offer bread and salt, as a gesture of hospitality. Hand painted in traditional “flat” icon style with proverb in old Russian that literally means “eat bread with salt and listen to us talking”. The back of the plate is rather interesting, it was bought in Russia after perestroika (in 1980s) and has a faded paper sticker from the trader, it has a rough translation of the above proverb written on the back in English with pencil and some other markings in pen. However in the middle there is an oval faded maker’s stamp in old Russian (was used before the Russian revolution in 1917) that is very difficult to make out but the name of the maker can be Petrov (Петровь). Petrov is probably the most common surname in Russia. Turned mahogany wood, wall ready.
