Description: Hadrian | AE29 | Koinon of Bithynia Reference: RPC III 996, Rec 44–45 Date: 117-138 CE Obverse: ΑΥΤ ΚΑΙϹ ΤΡΑΙ ΑΔΡΙΑΝΟϹ ϹΕΒ; radiate bust right Reverse: ΚΟΙΝΟΝ ΒΕΙΘΥΝΙΑϹ; temple with eight columns on podium of two steps, no pellet in pediment Mint: Nicomedia, Bithynia Size: 28.5 mm Weight: 10.76 grams A scarce type from northern Anatolia. Koinon were "provincial councils" established to aid in the governance of Roman territories. They also issued bronze coins to serve as small change in local markets. This nice radiate bronze likely held similar purchasing power as the imperial dupondius but would only be accepted in the towns and cities of Bithynia. The patina has been partially removed on high points by overzealous cleaning. Policies I apply the highest ethical standards in selling ancient coins. All coins are guaranteed to be genuine and any item found to be otherwise may be returned for a full refund. The most important thing is that you are happy with your new coin(s)! All coins are shipped in PVC-free, archival-grade coin flips and inserts made of acid-free paper Domestic (USA) shipping only If you purchase multiple items please message me before you pay and I will combine the shipping for you.
