Description: Viminacium, Moesia | Gordian III | AE31 "Sestertius" Reference: SNG Cop 142, Moushmov 32 Date: 241 CE Obverse: IMP GORDIANVS PIVS FEL AVG; laureate and draped bust right Reverse: P M S COL VIM; Moesia standing left between bull (Legio VII Claudia Pia Fidelis) & lion (Legio IIII Flavia Felix). AN III (years since colonia founding) in exergue Mint: Viminacium, Moesia Size: 31.0 mm Weight: 20.23 grams Ex David Connors. While not a true imperial issue, this coin likely served a similar purpose to a sestertius in the environs of Viminacium. Viminacium (near modern Kostolac, Serbia) gained colonia status during the reign of Gordian III in 239 CE. The city was a major administrative and military center for the Danube frontier, including the legionary fortresses of both Legio IV Flavia Felix (the lion) and Legio VII Claudia Pia Fidelis ( the bull). This coin commemorates the presence of these two legions in the city. Policies I apply the highest ethical standards in selling ancient coins.
