Description: Elagabalus | AE20 Reference: RPC VI 8049, Date: 218-220 CE Obverse: ΑΥΤ ΚΑΙ ΜΑΡ ΑΥΡ ΑΝΤΩΝΕΙΝΟϹ ϹΕ; radiate head of Elagabalus, right, with drapery Reverse: S-C within laurel wreath; below, eagle facing, spreading wings, head right. Δ Ε above. Mint: Antioch, Syria Size: 20.4 mm Weight: 4.94 grams The reverse inscription reads "By decree of the Senate, of the 4 eparchies". This advertises a long standing falsehood that the bronze coinage of the empire was struck under the authority of the Senate. By the third century CE, this hadn't been true for over 200 years, with all monetary production being firmly centralized under the emperor. A decent provincial bronze of the infamous emperor, Elagabalus. Some green oxidative spots on the obverse and reverse. Policies I apply the highest ethical standards in selling ancient coins.
