Roman Imperial | Julian the Apostate | AE Double Maiorina | Pagan Apis Bull Type

Description: Julian II | AE Double Maiorina Reference: RIC VIII 225 Date: 360-363 CE Obverse: DN FL CL IVLIANVS PF AVG, pearl-diademed, draped, and cuirassed bust right Reverse: SECVRITAS REIPVB, bull standing right, two stars above. Palm branch-TESB-palm branch in exergue Mint: Thessalonica Size: 28.0 mm Weight: 7.35 grams A fine example of the large bronze coins that were struck under Julian's doomed efforts to bring the Empire back to its pagan days. The bull on the reverse is the Apis bull, a historically important pagan icon from Egypt. Apis was a sacred bull or multiple sacred bulls worshiped in the Memphis region of Egypt. He was identified as the son of Hathor, an important deity in the pantheon of ancient Egypt. Importantly, Apis would go through cycles of being sacrificed and reborn. It could be that Julian was announcing the rebirth of the pagan empire by issuing these types. Julian was the last remaining male relative of Constantine when Constantius II decided he needed a Caesar to look after the West. Julian dutifully took up the job, and successfully campaigned on the Germans on the Rhine. He was proclaimed Emperor by his troops and as chance would have it, Constantius II died before he could punish his up-start subordinate. Instead Julian, who'd pretended to be a Christian his whole life, ascended to the throne; said "jk lol" (or something to that effect, probably); and tried to make the empire pagan again. He failed and was ultimately fragged by his own soldier while on campaign against the Persians. ROUGH Policies I apply the highest ethical standards in selling ancient coins.
