REAR ADMIRAL ROBERT WYMAN - MANUSCRIPT LETTER SIGNED 09/21/1876 - HFSID 273025 UNION NAVY: ROBERT WYMAN. MLS: "R.H. Wyman" as Commodore, U.S. Navy and Hydrographer, 1p, 7¾x9¾. Washington, D.C., 1876 September 21. On letterhead of the Hydrographic Office, Bureau of Navigation to Lieutenant Murray S. Day, New York. Begins: "Sir". In full: "If you can dispense with the Standard Scale belonging to his office - Will you please forward the Same by Ad-Ex-Co - Very Respectfully & c". Robert H. Wyman (1822-1882) headed the Navy's Hydrographic Office for eight years, being promoted to Commodore (1872) and Rear Admiral (1878) for his leadership. During his tenure, Wyman established a systematic program of worldwide charting and surveying, eliminating the Navy's previous dependence on navigational charts that came primarily from foreign sources (largely from Britain during the Civil War). Wyman, who had been appointed a Midshipman in 1837, began his naval career in the Brazilian station, serving on several ships, including the John Adams, which was commanded by his father. During the Mexican War, Wyman was with Commodore Conner's Home Squadron, initially on the steamer Princeton. After a tour of duty at the National Observatory in Washington, D.C., Wyman returned to sea, commanding the Richmond in the Mediterranean station at the outbreak of the Civil War. During the war, Wyman served on a number of ships, taking command of the Potomac River Flotilla in December 1861. Over the course of the war, his ships destroyed Southern bridges, captured nine Confederate ships and burned 40 schooners. After the Civil War, Wyman commanded the Colorado and the Ticonderoga before beginning his tenure at the Hydrographic Office. In 1878, he was given command of the North Atlantic Squadron. Lightly creased with folds, not at signature. Tape remnant on verso shows through at left margin, touching three words of writing (all completely legible). Pencil notes (unknown hand) on verso (no show through). Overall, fine condition. See more material from these signers: REAR ADMIRAL ROBERT WYMAN See more listings in our MILITARY (2,395) category.
