Guggenheim Museum, New YorkNotes: The Six (6) individual porcelain plates were designed exclusively by Rauschenberg for the largest retrospective of Rauschenberg's output at the time at the Guggenheim Museum in New York City in 1997Provenance: From the collection of an important Contemporary Art Collector in Indian Wells, CaliforniaAbout the Artist & this Item: One of the most influential and innovative artists, Rauschenberg’s creative contributions drove artistic movements such as Abstract Expressionism and Neo-Dada, tirelessly toying with the boundary separating art and life and challenging the conventional notions of art as singular, isolated, and complete object. This limited edition set of six porcelain plates, designed exclusively for Rauschenberg’s largest retrospective at the Guggenheim Museum in 1997, each depicts a different photograph taken by the artist and bear a print of his signature on the back. Reappropriating images of urban spaces, abstract details, works of art, and cultural symbols, Rauschenberg subverts medium-specificity and modes of display, exacerbating the ambiguities of the photograph and its features as his work hinges on painting, sculpture, and photography, unapologetic in its ambiguity. Rauschenberg’s Guggenheim retrospective traveled to the Menil Collection, the Contemporary Arts Museum, and the Museum of Fine Arts all in Houston, as well as to Europe, with exhibitions at Museum Ludwig, Cologne, and the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao. Awarded the Grand Prize for painting at the Venice Biennale in 1964, Rauschenberg has been exhibited and celebrated worldwide.
