Revolutionary War Patriot Cone Delivers Sugar To The Continental Army

Description: 6 x 7 ½, two-page itemized receipt for transporting sugar to the Revolutionary War army with one team of horses. The document is dated December 22, 1778, Middletown [CT] by OZIAS CONE, a Revolutionary War patriot who served in the army for more than five years. He fought in the 5th Connecticut Line, and fought at Germantown (1777), Monmouth (1778), and Stoney Point (1779). He wintered over at Valley Forge.Cone lists the nights he spent at various dwellings, along with places where he had dinner. He returned with two teams of horses. On the verso, he notes that he received thirty pounds, seventeen shillings in full from ELIJAH HUBBARD.After the war Cone and his wife Mary moved from Middletown to Paris, Oneida County, New York where he was an early pioneer. He died in 1823; she died in 1812. [from "Some Account of the Cone Family"]HUBBARD was a lawyer, merchant and Revolutionary War administrator. In May 1777, he was appointed commissary of the stores provided by Connecticut for troops in the Continental Army. He served until 1783. In civilian life, Hubbard ran a successful West Indies trading company.Sugar was a highly controversial commodity leading up to the Revolutionary War as the British imposed taxes on sugar and other products to help pay for the British army’s debt incurred during the Seven Years War. This infuriated the colonists as the tax seriously impacted the colonies’ ability to trade with anyone but Great Britain. While the tax was abolished, anger continued to build in the colonies over the British attempt to impose taxes. The colonists ultimately declared “No taxation without representation.”Folds and expected toning.Everything we sell is guaranteed authentic forever to the original buyer.
