Description: I enjoy rebuilding unlikely combinations of old hardware into something usable. This example cobbles together a sturdy Enlight Baby AT case, a cheap Amptron/PC Chips motherboard, a somewhat forgotten AMD CPU with gigabit ethernet, and four USB 2.0 ports all running Windows 98 SE. Most of the hardware dates from 1998. This month I replaced CMOS battery and hard drive, upgraded the RAM, added USB and ethernet cards and reinstalled WIndows 98SE with all necessary drivers. It is now ready to install your favorite applications, from floppy diskette, CD, or from a USB flash drive. This is a quality midtower case from the days when some people still used multiple 5.25" drives. The case is 18.2 inches tall and 16.5" deep. With a CD ROM, floppy drive and 3.5" hard drive installed there are still three exposed 5.25" drive bays, plus one more hidden 3.5" drive bays available for adding additional drives. To open the case, one must first remove the front cover, and then the side panels The heart of the system is a PC Chips M571 baby AT motherboard, sold as an Amptron PM9100 with a TX3 chipset. It actually uses an SiS 5597/5598 chipset for socket 7 CPUs up to 300 MHz. I include a 166 MHz AMD K6 processor The two 168-pin memory sockets are maxxed out with two 64MB PC-100 SDRAM DIMMs installed. There are also four 72-pin SIMM sockets. Maximum RAM is 384MB if all sockets are filled with EDO RAM. The motherboard includes connectors for two serial ports, a parallel port a large DIN5 keyboard connector, a joystick/MIDI port and audio conectors all in back. I added an NEC 4-port USB 2.0 card and a Netgear GA311 gigabit ethernet card. The motherboard still has two 16-bit ISA slots and two PCI slots free. The original 1.44MB floppy drive, and Mitsumi 24X CD ROM are all still working. I added a Quantum Fireball 3.2GB IDE hard drive, which is partitioned as a single C: drive. I am happy to answer any questions about this system before your purchase. You will receive the exact tower case and internal components pictured here. I do not include any keyboard, monitor, mouse, power cord, or software I do offer a 30 day return privilege but return shipping is at the buyer's expense. Shipping charges are calculated by eBay with no handling fee. Local pickup in zip code 60438 is free.
