This was the first award ever awarded by the newly formed United States, Congress gave other medals to Commanding officers and Admirals but did not offer any other type of award or medal for enlisted men.In 1782, General Washington established the Badge of Military Merit. This was the forerunner of one of the most famous U.S. medals. Three awarded were made before the badge fell into disuse. This is a replica of the original badge designed by Washington.
