The overall design is reminiscent of door furniture from the early 1800's which had a bit of a resurgence as lever door handles became more popular in the Edwardian period.These are a good quality rich coloured solid unlacquered brass with an antique finish, they will continue to age down, alternatively they can easily be polished back to shiny.
