Description: Set a fine table for your honored guests and beloved family with... "Francis I" Sterling Silver Flatware by Reed & Barton HISTORY & STYLE The "Francis I" flatware pattern was designed and produced by Reed & Barton in Taunton, Massachusetts. The pattern was originally envisioned by company co-founder Henry Gooding Reed, who oversaw its development until his death in 1901. Design work continued, and the pattern was introduced in 1907. It was immediately popular and remained so -- in continuous production in Taunton for more than 100 years, until 2019. "Francis I" was chosen as the personal pattern of three U.S. Presidents: Wilson, Truman, and Eisenhower. So although its decorations and shape are inspired by the Renaissance period in Europe (14th, 15th, and 16th centuries), the history of "Francis I" is true-blue American. Stylistically, "Francis I" is a brilliant example of the artistry of silversmithing. The handle is beautifully shaped, and it balances well in hand. Its top third is tastefully decorated with scrolls, leaves, blossoms, and fruits. Below that, the tapered stem is flanked by a simple thread design, then the handle flares to meet the shoulders of the fork or spoon, where a chevron of scrolls and leaves extends into the bowl. What elevates "Francis I" far above other sterling patterns is that each piece-type has a different collection of flowers and fruit! Why is the pattern called "Francis I"? Does the name honor Francis I, the Holy Emperor? Or Francis I de'Medici, an uber-patron of the Renaissance? Or the Francis I who was King of France? Or the one who was Duke of Brittany? Or the one ruled Mantua, Italy? Or the Prince of Lichtenstein? It was the co-founder Reed who selected "Francis I" as the name of the pattern. But why he did still remain a mystery. 30 PIECES OF STERLING SILVER FLATWARE FREE STORAGE CHEST PROVIDED Your set of sterling silver flatware comes with a storage chest (pictured) for safekeeping and to prevent tarnishing.
