Description: Here is a nice old RPPC Real Photo Post Card for your collection! This card comes from a 40 year collection of fine postcards including RP's. This postcard shows a 1908 view of a small town in Maine. There is an old lumber mill type building in view with a river for shipping product behind it. In the distance to the left is a steel or iron bridge. There are lots of windows and a freight door upstairs to load product. The card front is printed and reads Foster Estate Tooth Pick Mill Dixfield Maine. Note, the business owners name is misspelled and should read Forster. Forster was an entrepreneur that created a need for a brand new product to the US, the toothpick. He would pay well-dressed young men to dine in classy Boston establishments and, upon finishing their meal, ask for a Forster’s wooden toothpick. The establishment wouldn’t have it and the young men would make a fuss and attract the attention of the manager. This would create the appearance of demand for the products. Forster organized a similar stunt in local shops, entering the store shortly after his actors stormed out and selling his wares wholesale. He initially employed 20 men and 12 women at his factory operations to work 10 hours a day, six days a week. Production was seasonal, shutting down when the forest became muddy and wood was too difficult to procure due to lack of logging roads. Started in 1887 the company closed it doors in 2003. Card back is divided and is postmarked. Condition is good as shown. Guaranteed vintage and original. The watermark is not on the postcard you are buying here.
