Description: 1893 World's Fair "Types & Scenes from the Midway Plaisance" hardcover book Blue cloth with gilt design. Published by The American Engraving Company, Chicago, 1894. Souvenir book from the 1983 Chicago's World's Fair. Some rough corners and dirt spots on the front, but overall intact and lavishly illustrated with people of differing cultures and ethnicities. Also a photo of the first Ferris Wheel constructed for the Expo. Fun facts: The Fair's directors did not originally intend to set aside any space for a side show of exotic exhibits (too 'low-brow'), but the popularity of the ethnological exhibits at the 1889 Paris exhibition (not to mention the profits) changed their minds. They decided to reserve the Midway Plaisance, a mile-long shady pleasure drive that connected Jackson Park with nearby Washington Park for this purpose. The name Midway Plaisance was shortened to Midway and thus entered the English lexicon as a term denoting any carnival area with games, rides, and vendors.
