Description: RARE VIEWS SCENE. MINTONS. 8 INCH C 1895.. ENGRAVED BY L T SWETNAM. Here we have the less common 8" views scene from Mintons of Cardinal Beaton's House in Edinburgh. It shows a view along the Cowgate of Edinburgh. The view dates to the early 19th century (although the tile is more late 19th century) - and it shows Cardinal Beaton's House - which was demolished.in 1868. The ancient dwelling consisted of a hexagonal turret and was built for James Beaton, Archbishop of Glasgow between 1509 and 1522. It stood on the southeast corner of Blackfriars Wynd - which was widened in the 1860s as part of the Improvements Act - and is now known as Blackfriars Street. THE BACKGROUND COLOUR IS MORE CREAMIER THAN IN THE PHOTOS. It's a brown print on a cream background it's framed with a bead border pattern and plain bands within. It's in very good condition with one underglaze nibble on the bottom edge and a couple of minute ones on the same edge. It's finished with a brilliance glaze. Embossed on the back is Mintons, China Works. Stoke on Trent. Please check the photo's carefully as I am not perfect and sometimes might miss something.
