Description: Description: Tampa Bay AGATIZED FOSSIL Coral Geode, PAIR, Goniopora ballistensis This is a sliced and polished pair of fossil coral geodes from Tampa Bay, Florida. When put together, they show on the outside they original fossil form of the finger coral, Goniopora ballistensis. Look closely and you can see the individual coral polyps (similar to a star coral). Inside, over many millions of years (from the Miocene Age), the hard Calcium skeleton has been replaced with a gem quality Chalcedony in many colors. This specimen has a white base with some tan to bluish nodules. It can fluorescent white with some yellow.This specimen is from an old collection, collected in 1960 to 1970. The collection site is Ballast Point in Tampa (thus comes the species name). It has been well pick over and almost impossible to find any more geodes. The site has also been made into a City Park (=no more digging.) Specimens were first discovered in the early 19th century at Ballast Point area. The quartz (chalcedony) inside was thought to help in psychic powers of telecommunications. It was perfect for working with past memories, for travel on or near water!!! ??? In 1979 the Florida Agatized Coral was made the Official State Gemstone. You get the exact specimen shown in the photos above. This Goniopora ballistensis is 13.5 cm. long and 5.4 cm. wide.
