Description: Stunning John Harvard Antique Solid Bronze Statue Sculpture Griffoul. This is a stunning high relief antique bronze casting portraying John Harvard, the patron and namesake of Harvard University in Cambridge, Massachusetts. This sculpture features incredible life like details and weighs an impressive 10lb 14oz. It is solid bronze. Measures 3.75 inches wide, 6 inches deep, and 8 inches high. Fantastic untouched patina, Original green felt bottom is worn but still there. The style is very similar to the famous statue by Daniel Chester French, which is located in Harvard Yard. The subtle difference in this sculpture depicts the subject holding a scroll and there some books behind his left foot.I could not find any references online to this work. It is signed on the side "W.P. Roberts Arca. Sa (C) 1911". On the back, it is stamped "Cast by Griffoul Newark NJ". Some info about Griffoul: Auguste Griffoul had operated a foundry in Paris where he made a cast of the Thinker for Auguste Rodin in 1896. By 1905, he had opened a foundry in Newark, NJ, reported to have been the last foundry in America using French sand. Apart from Medicine Whip, Griffoul cast at least one other subject for Charles M. Russell also produced bronzes for Augustus Saint-Gaudens and James Earle Fraser. Please check out my other auctions for more antique Griffoul bronze, Pompeian Bronze, Armor Bronze, and KBW. Great present for the Harvard alumni in your life. Will be carefully double boxed to ensure safe arrival. Local pick-up is also available.
