Description: An early Scottish provincial silver quaich Decorated with thistle motifs on the main body and handles.Gilded interior Crested on Both sides with the latin phraseSORTI AEQUUS ETRIQUEand engraved with the crest of theMaclean Clanthis translates to englishan equal lot for both Quaichs were often used in marriage ceremonies which aligns with the phrase which means equal share (50% )Also the fact the quaich is engraved with the crest on both sides aligns with two people sharing a drink of whisky while standing facing each other as would be the case in a marriage ceremony. The makers mark struck three times is PG for Peter Gill of Aberdeen 1783-1812One PG mark has been overstruck on another makers mark on the handle, there are also additional marks on the base, an anchor and the letter S, these marks were used in Paisley Greenock and Dumfries, I am of the opinion the quaich predates 1800 and was reworked at this time by Peter Gill of Aberdeen, the gilding and thistle decoration was most likely added then.It was not uncommon for families to take a piece of silver to their silversmith and have it reworked for a special occasion such as a wedding or christening. This is a rare piece of Scottish silver with an interesting history.
