Yonezawa, Yamagata Prefecture, Japan, circa the 1960s. Signed.Shido-san was born in Oita prefecture in 1932. He attended the Chuo University in Tokyo, graduating with a law degree. He later moved to the city of Yonezawa in Yamagata prefecture and dedicated himself to the art of kokeshi. In 1959 he started out as a traditional Yamagata School artist. His works masterfully use the natural wood grain to bring out beautiful and delicate designs. In addition to being a talented traditional kokeshi maker, Shido-san quickly established himself as an innovative sosaku ("creative") kokeshi master and is considered by kokeshi collectors and critics to be a highly influential figure during the time of the 1960s sosaku revolution in kokeshi making. In sosaku kokeshi, Shido-san's main focus was depicting unadorned Northern girls in the traditional mino ("snow coat"), but he is also famous for creating tall, thin, minimalist style figurines. His keen sense of design, minimal use of color, and simple, elegant shapes set him apart from his peers, making his works highly popular and sought-after among collectors. His works won numerous awards, including the prestigious Prime Minister Award. He served as a judge of the All Japan Kokeshi Contest from 1970 to 1976. During that time he published a book titled Kizin Kasho comprising examples of his award-winning kokeshi. His works have been collected and exhibited worldwide. This figurine is a beautiful example of Yamagata kokeshi made by a master. It showcases the delicate interplay between the natural beauty of the wood grains and the expression of the Yamagata traditional decorative pattern. Elegant, stylish, and very authentic.
