Description: A rare very large jar covered with wood ash glaze giving it a stunning effect. Such jars like this are highly prized. According to the writing on the box the jar was made at the Tansui Kiln, which is a principle kiln making Tamba pottery. The individual potter’s distinctive mark is on the foot of the pot. Tamba is one of the six ancient kilns of Japan & can trace its history back nearly 850 years. This is an exceptional example of this ancient art. Tamba ceramics are a preferred ware used in the tea ceremony. This piece was purchased directly from a gallery in Japan in 2004.
