Description: RARE LARGE 8" FRAMED MINTON WAVERLEY TILE by JOHN MOYR SMITH - 1878 This really is a superb, and I would think quite rare and large framed, hand painted (???) over transfer dust pressed Minton wall tile designed in 1878 by John Moyr Smith, for the Paris Exhibition of that year, which depicts a scene from Walter Scott’s second Waverley novel ‘Guy Mannering'. In a large (8") form wall tile it is decorated with an image of the scene where gypsy Meg Merrilees meets Dirk Hatteraick, the smuggler, in his cave which is contained inside a foliate border and armorials with titles above and below and Moyr Smith's signature to the left and the chapter number to the right. It is backstamped with the 'Minton’s China Works, Stoke on Trent'', and another impressed marks, and an attached previous vender’s label, while the frame, itself is in excellent original condition. All-in-all a very nicely presented interesting tile. It measures 8" (20.5cm) - 9 5/8 (24.5cm) with frame approx; and is in excellent condition with no defect (that can be seen – it is framed) to report, even the frame is in fine original condition for its age - see photographs and details. This is a lovely rare early period Minton Moyr Smith tile in lovely condition and very well presented which I’m sure will have great appeal to all collectors . ** THERE IS NO RESERVE ON THIS SALE *** INSURANCE IS INCLUDED IN THE SHIPPING PRICES QUOTED IN MOST CASES (SEE BELOW) TERMS & CONDITIONS Please read this as it's designed to make transactions with my customers as simple and transparent as possible.
