Description: Rare LADY ON BARREL KEG FRENCH MAJOLICA TOBY JUG Antique Bottle Pitcher c1940 #2 This is a French MAJOLICA LADY ON A BARREL DECANTER, Antique Bottle Keg TOBY JUG circa 1910 #2. This Majolica MAN ON A BARREL is modeled in deep relief; the hand painting, décor and glaze are very well done. The LADY has long hair, is holding a cup, a cask under his arm; he is nattily dressed in period garb. This LADY ON BARREL FRENCH MAJOLICA TOBY JUG: - Includes full body figure of a whimsical French Faience LADY ASTRIDE A BARREL- probably the indication of a hogshead barrel of spirits, 53 gallons; - has CALLIGRAPHY on the front of the barrel, “WW LA NATION”; - has a rounded stove-pipe type hat that forms the top spout; - is decorated with stylized accents, and a typical palette of French Majolica, including a creamy white background decorated with teal green, blue, yellow, plum red, and gray; - the base underside is glazed and marked "SP" in red under glaze, and stamped in black "OCTAV" and "FAIT MAIN"; the rim foot is unglazed. This LADY ON BARREL FRENCH MAJOLICA DECANTER Bottle Keg TOBY JUG #2 by Fait Main Moustiers Faience is in very good condition. Condition status includes minimal normal wear and rubbing, glaze losses, firing flaws, crazing and fretting. Overall, this work is sound, having no chips, cracks, or major defects, and having had no apparent repairs or restorations. Please see all photos which are a part of this description. This item i sold as is, as described. Please note; photos have been taken in indirect sunlight; therefore, reflections and lighting spots may appear, but do not necessarily indicate defects. The estimated date is Early 20th Century, circa 1940. Dimensions: 10.2 In. Tall X 5.2 In. Wide X 5.1 In. Deep Weight: 1 Lb., 7.5 Oz. This is Moustiers style fine country French art pottery. This style includes production techniques whereby tin glazes and decorations are applied and worked in stages upon a modeled terra cotta pottery form and fired several times in a kiln. It is noted that French Majolica is not inherently "perfect" - pieces were still handmade and as such have marks like little dents in the pottery which are glazed over. This is not damage- this is part of the history of old pottery and how it was made.Sellers NoteSelling my personal collection of French Faience and Majolica, interested to sell one at a time, or as a group in a collection.
