Description: Rare letter hand-written by American political cartoonist John Tinney McCutcheon (1870-1949) known as the Dean of American cartoonists referencing his political cartoon of the William Taft steam roller. The recipient of this letter was prominent American journalist and historian Mark Sullivan (1874-1952). Mark Sullivan was considered one of the most widely respected journalists of his day corresponding with Presidents Theodore Roosevelt, William Taft, Woodrow Wilson, Warren Harding, Calvin Coolidge and Herbert Hoover. Sullivan was a confidant to Theodore Roosevelt as well as a good friend and confidant to Herbert Hoover. In addition to Presidents, Sullivan corresponded with many notable politicians, businessmen and literary figures of the day including Arthur Conan Doyle who he was good friends with as well as Henry Ford, Thomas Edison, Orville Wright and many other prominent and influential people from the 1890's to mid-1900's. Sullivan wrote and published between 1926-1935 a six volume book by the title 'Our Times 1900-1925' which chronicled the social and political history of America from the 1890's to 1920's. Sullivan correspondence can be found archived in the manuscript division of the Library of Congress and in the Herbert Hoover Institution Archives. This correspondence is likely in response to an inquiry by Sullivan for information to be utilized in his book 'Our Times 1900-1925' and kept in his personal files. The letter which is signed in ink by McCutcheon is hand-written on stationery with printed street address letterhead. The stationery has typical fold creases.
