Description: Quite rare. This wooden porte-buvard or ink blotter holder is an excellent example of Paul Fouillon's avant-garde representation of the Breton Couple found in Quimper pottery. Here just their faces are painted, at a much elderly age, in front of a grayish brick wall. Fouillon was a celebrated artist who worked for HB in the 1920's. Paul Fouillon continued to make faience in his own studio in the 1930's adding woodwork like this to his body of work. He burnt his design into the wood using a small poker, then he painted it giving a rustic feel to the whole piece. Circa 1935, this piece has his mark in one of the lower bricks. The wood and painting is in very good condition. The blotter has ink stains of course. This work of art can be added to a variety of collections, including Quimper for its subject alone. Or a blotter collection. Writing materials collection. It is art. No more Fouillon direct to wood painting is being made. I have listed another Fouillon - a wooden plate with a painting of the face of an elderly Breton woman. Size of porte-buvard is 6.3 in. X 3.3 in. It weighs 6.4 oz. I prefer to sell within the U.S. but will consider sale internationally for this piece. Shipping price is estimated until packaged and weighed.
