Rare Heirloom and Hard to Find Apple Tree Seeds- Organic

Description: Heirloom and Rare Apple Tree Seeds - please see germination instructions and apple descriptions before ordering. Germinating apple tree seeds is not difficult, but takes a bit of time and patience. What we as growers try to do when planting apple seeds is to create a condition that is similar to what is found in nature, by keeping the seeds cold and damp in a refrigerator or planted outside in a cold garage or shed for a couple of months in order to break seed dormancy. These apple seeds have either been grown by myself, or are varieties collected from a local heirloom organic apple orchard. A few (Cosmic Crisp, Gala, Fuji and Pink Lady) are from a Wenauchee Washington organic orchard. I'm making these heirloom apple tree seeds available for anyone who wants to experiment with growing fruit trees from seed. They can also be used as a rootstock for grafting. These apple trees may have cross pollinated with other heirloom apple tree variety's nearby. The results of planting apple seeds can be random, but can also produce useful new varieties with desirable traits. ----------------------------Cosmic Crisp Apple: WA38. Wenatchee, Washington (Honeycrisp x Enterprise) crossed 1997, available to the public 2019 (Zone 4-9)Cosmic Crisp was bred at the Washington State University's Tree Fruit Research Center. The PLANTS are licensed to be sold only to people residing in the state of Washington. (The seeds however are exempt from regulation.) A red, large to very large apple with firm crisp, very juicy yellow flesh. Sweet, slightly tangy flavor. Flesh does not turn brown when cut. Moderately vigorous upright spreading tree with some fruit spurs developing on older trees. Fruit keeps for up to one year in storage.---------------------------Early Joe Apple: 1800 NY State Zone 4-7 This variety was found growing on an old farm on state forest land which I grafted on to it's own rootstock. I am reasonably sure that it is the Early Joe apple variety. Early Joe was originally grown in New York state from seeds brought by Herman Chapin from Salisbury Connecticut around the year 1800. Early ripening starting in August, small to medium size apples with red stripes fading to dark purple. Fine grained tender juicy sweet spicy flesh with a vinous pear like flavor. Flesh is sometimes streaked with red. Ripens over a long period, usually one month or more which makes it ideal for backyard growers. Fruit keeps for a month or so in cold storage. The tree is an upright grower and begins bearing fruit at a young age. Produces very heavy crops biennially unless fruit is thinned. This variety can be grown organically and produce usable apples without spraying. Tree has taken -25 deg.F. without damage. -------------------------- Fuji: Tohoku 7, Japan 1939. Ralls Genet x Red Delicious. Zone 4-9 Orange red skin with elongated light streaks and dots. Sweet juicy moderately crisp flesh. Considered a high quality eating apple. Thin moderately tender skin. The tree is very vigorous in habit and can grow up to 4 feet per year. Has a spreading weeping form. Fuji keeps in storage for six months or longer and ripens in October. -------------------------- Gala: Kidd’s D-8. New Zealand, 1934. Cox's Orange Pippin x (Red delicious x Golden Delicious.) Zone 4-8 Hutton Kidd developed Gala during the 1930s on his 20-acre orchard in New Zealand’s Wairarapa Valley. Solid red orange color, can be stripped red on yellow white background depending on the strain. Crisp dense juicy aromatic sweet flesh, but can also be somewhat insipid depending on the growing conditions. Tree may be self fertile, but benefits from cross pollination. Spur bearing, upright grower, begins bearing quickly, moderate vigor, flowers tolerate frost. Grows best in a warm dry climate. Biennial tendency unless thinned. A low chill variety, can be grown in warmer winter areas. Ripens in September. Stores for up to 5 months. Seed is from a red/red striped sweet flavored strain. -------------------------- Gilpin: Red Romanite, Carthouse, Dollar and Cents. Pennsylvania 1700's. Unknown parentage. Zone 4-8 Gilpin was found growing on the farm of Joseph Gilpin in Delaware County, Pennsylvania in the 1700s. The apples are medium to large with smooth tough, deep red skin. Yellow sweet richly flavored flesh. Good for fresh eating cooking and cider making. Bears medium to heavy crops annually and dependably. Late blooming tree grows open and spreading with good branching characteristics. Ripens in October. The fruit hangs on the tree late into the fall. -------------------------- Golden Russet: American Russet, Bullock's Pippin. New Jersey. 1714. Zone 4-8 Skin has golden brown russeting on a green background with a coppery red cheek in full sun. The fruit is medium in size with a round shape. The yellow flesh is fine grained with an exceptionally sweet nutty aromatic flavor. Tree is upright growing with weeping willowy branches. The fruit is born on the tips of branches. Flowers early and is a low chill variety but apples need protection from hot sun in warm summer areas by pruning to a closed center. Resistant to disease but susceptible to sunscald in warm areas. Ripens in October and apples may keep until April in regular cold storage. Golden Russet is good for fresh eating, cider and drying. Known as the champagne of cider apples.--------------------------Haralson: Minnesota 90. Minnesota 1913. Malinda x Wealthy. Zone 3-6 Haralson was crossed in 1913 and released in 1922 at the University of Minnesota's fruit breeding farm. The apples are somewhat oblong in shape with red stripes on a yellow green background. The white flesh is extremely juicy, crisp and sweet tart in flavor. Is good for fresh eating, pies, and cider. It stores all winter in an icebox or cold root cellar. Resistant to fireblight and cedar apple rust, but susceptible to sooty blotch and fly speck which are superficial skin diseases that can usually be washed off. The tree grows upright and bears very heavy crops biennially unless the fruit is thinned to prevent overbearing. Haralson is a very cold hardy apple which has taken -50 deg.F. temperatures in the north. Begins bearing fruit quickly, in as little as two years on a standard full sized rootstock. ------------------------- Honey Gold Apple: Also known as Minnesota 1595. Origin: Minnesota 1935. Golden Delicious x (Malinda x Wealthy.) Zone 3-9 Crossed in 1935 at the University of Minnesota's Horticulture Research Center in Excelsior Minnesota. Selected in 1945, released in 1970. Fruit is medium to large, round conic with a light green golden yellow color. Smooth skin has small star shaped russet dots scattered over skin surface. Flesh is yellow white, crisp juicy sweet with slight honeyed flavor. Moderately vigorous open growing tree which begins bearing fruit when young. Resistant to scab and mildew, but somewhat susceptible to cedar apple rust and fireblight. Keeps up to three months in cold storage. Apples are slow to turn brown when cut. ------------------------- Karmijn de Sonnaville: Carmine. Netherlands 1949. Coxe's Orange Pippin x Jonathan. Zone 5-9Is an apple variety bred in 1949 by Piet de Sonnaville of Wageningen Netherlands. Medium to large in size with orange red tan coloring over green yellow base color. Aromatic sweet tart nutty richly flavored. High in sugar and acidity that mellows when stored for a week or two. Good for fresh eating, cider and cooking. Tree is a moderately vigorous spur bearing variety which needs thinning to prevent overbearing from heavy fruit set. Fruit keeps for up to four months in cold storage. Has a tendency to drop fruit prematurely. ------------------------- McIntosh Original: Originally named Gem before 1935. Fameuse x Detroit Red. Ontario Canada 1796. Zone 4-8. Discovered as a chance seedling in 1796 by John McIntosh while clearing land. He discovered 20 apple trees growing wild and transplanted them near his home. All but one died. The tree was kept near his home for 74 years before being offered into cultivation by his son Allan McIntosh in 1870. Medium size green fruit with red overlay. Flesh is white, sweet, mildly tart crisp and juicy when first picked, becoming mealy and less spicy in storage, best when picked from the tree. Good for fresh eating, cider, and pies. Tree is moderately vigorous, spur bearing, upright and spreading. Begins to bear fruit young. Tends to biennial production unless fruit is thinned. Very susceptible to apple scab, and also susceptible to bacterial canker. Moderately resistant to fireblight and mildew. Very resistant to cedar apple rust fungus. Prefers a cooler climate, but can be grown in warmer climates with a spray program for disease. McIntosh keeps for up to three months in cold storage.------------------------Northwestern Greening: Northwest greening. Wisconsin 1849. Golden Russet x Alexander. Zone 3-8 Was discovered by Jasen Hatch of Iola, Wisconsin in 1849. The tree was used as a rootstock for another apple variety until it died. The rootstock survived and produced fruit which E.W Daniels sampled and then undertook to introduce the apples into commerce in 1872. Medium to very large up to 5" in. in diameter, pale green waxy fruit, maturing to yellow green with a faint red cheek. Thin, very tough translucent skin with small raised lenticels. Flesh is yellow white, fine grained firm dense crisp and moderately juicy with a semi-sweet slightly tart flavor. Tree is vigorous, upright and spreading with a drooping growth habit. Resistant to fireblight and cedar apple rust. Used for fresh eating, baking and cider. Keeps up to 3 months in cold storage. Ripens in late September. ---------------------- Nova Spy: Nova Scotia Canada 1986. Nova Easygro x (Northern Spy x Golden delicious.) Zone 4-8 Developed by the Agricultural Research Station in Kentville, Nova Scotia. Nova spy was developed in order to produce a more disease resistant version of Northern Spy. Nova Spy also begins bearing fruit quicker than the Northern Spy apple. The Nova Spy variety begins bearing at 3 years while Northern Spy takes at least 10 years to begin bearing on standard rootstock. Fruit is medium to large, mostly covered with red on light green background. Fine grained flesh tart/sweet flavor. Good for fresh eating and especially good for pies. Tree is moderately vigorous, upright spreading, partial tip bearer, somewhat weeping in form. Resistant to mildew and apple scab, some susceptibility to cedar apple rust. Annual bearing. Fruit keeps for up to 4 months. Ripens late October. --------------------- Pink Lady: Cripps Pink. Australia 1973. Golden Delicious x Lady Williams. USDA Zone 5-9. Developed by John Cripps at the Stoneville Research Station Western Australian Department of Agriculture. Fruit is medium to large tall round conic, with thin skin. Mostly red pink color on green yellow background. White, somewhat course, juicy very sweet slightly tart flesh. Tree is very vigorous and upright spreading. Requires a long hot growing season of at least 150 frost free days. Moderately susceptible to apple scab, fireblight, and mildew. A low chill apple that can be grown in hot climates. Needs four weeks in storage to develop full flavor. Keeps 4 months in cold storage. Ripens late October to early November. --------------------- Pink Pearl: test seedling #39. Humboldt county California 1944. Surprise x unknown seedling. Zone 4-9. Developed by California plant breeder, Albert Etter from one of thirty open pollinated seedlings crossed with Surprise. Yellow white small to medium strawberry shaped fruit, with clear tough translucent skin, five bumps on blossom end. Soft tender moderately course mostly red tinged and red streaked white flesh, high in anthocyanins an antioxidant. Sweet/tart low acid moderately juicy, clean refreshing flavor, good for fresh eating and red tinged apple sauce. Resists browning when cut. Tree is low vigor, spur bearing with red flowers blooming early to mid early in the spring. Fruit stores for up to one month. Bears in 2-4 years when grafted onto semi-dwarfing rootstock. ---------------------- Pink Sparkle/Apricot Apple: Pink Sparkle (Etter 14-9, Pink Pearmain) 1940's------Apricot Apple. Salem Oregon. 1980's. I am unsure of this variety. "It is not a Pink Pearl." I believe it is most likely a Pink Sparkle which is an apple bred by the same breeder as Pink Pearl. It may also be the apple variety "Apricot" or another unknown red fleshed apple variety. "Please See Pictures" (Pink Sparkle): medium to large, round slightly elongated, red patches on green tan background. Pink flesh tinged with white. Juicy sweet/tart, berry flavored. Good for eating, pies, and sauce. Bred by Albert Etter, California apple breeder. Tree is moderately vigorous bears fruit on both spurs and ends of shoots. Resistant to apple scab, fireblight and mildew. Tree is partially self fertile. Apples keeps in cold storage for up to five months. Ripens in late September early October.--------------------Winesap Original: Unknown origin. Documented by Dr. James Mease before 1804. Zone 5-8 Small, medium to large fruit, round to oblong in shape red on yellow green background, may have some russet netting on red portion of fruit. Flesh is yellow white, sweet aromatic crisp and juicy with a wine like flavor. Good for fresh eating and well known for cider production. Tree is moderately vigorous, bears heavy crops annually, may need thinning to increase fruit size and insure annual production. Begins to bear early, three years on a standard sized rootstock. Pink flowers, triploid sterile pollen, cannot pollinate other apples, needs another apple pollinator nearby. A winter apple, apples store up to six months and tolerate freezing. Ripens in October. ------------------- To germinate apple tree seeds: Seeds need to be cold treated before they can germinate. Soak seed in water for 24 hours. Place seed in damp paper towel or peatmoss. Place seed with damp towel or peatmoss, in a plastic ziplock bag or mason jar.Keep in a refrigerator, or in a cold garage or shed. Seed should remain damp and below 45 deg. (35°- 45° F.) for 90 to 130 days, (3-4 months) in order to break dormancy.------------------------------------------ Check occasionally for mold or drying out. Replace towel if necessary. Seed may germinate in refrigerator towards end of stratification (cold treatment) period. ------------------------------------------ Planting apple tree seeds: Plant seeds 1/4" to 1/2" inch deep in pots. Keep moist but not water logged. Or plant outside 1" to 6" inches apart in rows 3' to 4' feet apart.Thin plants 6" to 12" apart in the row.Apple seeds should be kept cool at 50 to 65 deg.F. to germinate in 2 to 3 weeks.----------------------------------------- To germinate in 1-2 months: An alternative germinating method from Malling England. Mix seed with 1/3 it's weight of charcoal. Place in small sacks less than 1/2 full. Heat large vessel of water to 165°F. Submerge bag of seed in hot water and move around for 10 seconds. Remove bag of seed and place on slats to drain and cool for 30 minutes. Submerge bag of seed in hot water once again and move around for 10 seconds. Plunge seed in cold water after second dipping. Place seed in cold chamber at 36°F. Keep wet, turn and shake every 1 to 2 days. Seeds begin to germinate after 6 to 7 weeks. Sow seeds in warmth, 50°F. (Do not let seeds dry out from start to finish.) **************************************************
