Description: Presented is a stunning pair of asparagus tongs or sandwich tongs from Gorham. This piece is well cast, displaying fancy scrolls and the face of a cherub with its wings behind it. One side has a large cartouche that has never been monogrammed. The interior has a slight gold wash. On the inside of one edge, the piece is marked Sterling along with the maker's mark for Gorham. there is also and the letter M, possibly representing the year 1880. This style of tongs was popularized by Alphonse Debain, a French silversmith. This is the only pair by Gorham that we've ever seen. A rare find! The tongs are in excellent overall condition. The hinge and spring mechanism are in great shape. There are no monograms or monogram removals. The piece has no breaks, splits, dents, and repairs.
