This featured specimen is a rare find of multiple Epidote crystals, almost completely covered with Hematite, within a Clear Quartz point. Here is a summary of its unique characteristics: · It is an all-natural specimen of quartz, clear and transparent, with natural inclusions. It is prismatic, with very identifiable pointed and often uneven terminations · There are some crystalline planes within the quartz that exhibit strong double refraction which allows light to flow through and/or reflect upon it. When held under light and at certain angles, you can see beautiful rainbow hues, the beautiful luster including the strong refraction. These can be better appreciated in person as they can be difficult to capture in its entirety with clarity on camera · There are two secondary quartz crystal growths known as “Penetrator”, which is a quartz point that grew into another point. One is over 2 cm and the smaller one is approximately 1 cm · The color of Epidote is almost invariably green, with a pistachio color habit being very typical. However, this color is less evident because of the unique formation habit of the reddish-brown hematite that almost completely cover all the epidotes. Only the exposed tips can be seen as green plus the exposed cross section on one side of the tip of the quartz prism point. Elsewhere, these epidotes look reddish-brown, grown within the clear quartz prism point · The two exposed epidotes crystals are up to 1.5 cm in size and the largest one within the quartz prism point is up to 2 cm in size · The way this quartz point was excavated, it exposed a cross section on one side of the tip of the quartz prism point. There, you can identify the exposed two strips of green epidotes crystals, greenish but still reddish due to the hematite. This is truly fascinating. Here, you can see the slender epidote crystals, heavily striated, including growth layers, as well as late-growth small crystal layers growing upon a larger crystal. · Etching can be seen in the last picture under light on the surface of the quartz prism point. Etching is a unique characteristic and they appear as markings on the exterior surface of this quartz specimen where minerals have been washed away by hydrothermal water during its formation. Etchings are recognized by abrasions and/or intricate indentations, often forming patterns or textures. Specimens of this size is hard to excavate without abrasions but overall, the above highlights demonstrate that this large miniature specimen is truly one of a kind and rare in its formation habit. Hence, it is hard to find. It also displays and shows well at any angle. Such unique qualities and special appeal certainly warrant its place in any mineral collection! The finest and most desirable form of this mineral is in delicate elongated crystals that are extremely lustrous and often interconnected. The color of Epidote is almost invariably green, in all different shades and tones, with a pistachio color habit being very typical. In general, its color often ranges from light to dark-green, olive-green, brownish-green, yellowish-green, yellow, brown, black. Epidote is composed of basic calcium aluminum iron silicate. Usually, they form in long slender prismatic crystals; can also be in thick tabular crystals. Crystals are sometimes striated and may have interesting wedge-shaped terminations. They also may have etchings or growth layers, and may contain late-growth small crystal layers growing upon a larger crystal. They can also be columnar reticulated, acicular, radiating, in fan-shaped and wheat sheaf crystal groups, and in long, slender fragile interconnected crystal groupings. Hematite is composed of iron oxide and they occur in colors of black, gray to silver gray, even brown to reddish brown and red. Their formation habits vary from thin plates, as well as bundles of small micaceous plates to massive, botryoidal, reniform, stalactitic and radiating. Scalenohedral and rhombohedral crystals occur, as well as tabular and groups of tabular crystals. Their luster can be metallic to dull. Quartz minerals are composed of SiO2 silicon dioxide and occurs in basically all mineral environments, and is the important constituent of many rocks. Quartz is also the most varied of all minerals, occurring in all different forms, habits, and colors. Their colors range from colorless to white, purple, pink, brown, and black. Also gray, green, orange, yellow, blue, and red. Sometimes multicolored or banded. They can be transparent to opaque.
